* Consider your landscaping and garden vegetation. Trim back any overhanging branches, especially at the rear of the property that may help give access to rooms on the first floor or near upper flat roofs. Also do not give easy cover to intruders, trim back your vegetation so that you are happy with your privacy but weigh this up against giving too much privacy to a potential intruder!
* If you have moved properties, always get the locks not only changed but upgraded to the best and most secure that your money can afford. Too little effort is often made with this investment and at the end of the day a better lock will help to keep you more secure. If you ever lose your keys always be sure to change the locks for absolute peace of mind and security too.
* Always double lock your doors, do not just rely on the self latching style locks as they are far too easy to overcome by anyone who knows what they are doing.
* Never leave instruction notes for delivery men or other workmen anywhere on the outside of your property. This is one of the best ways to flag to an intruder that a property is unnocupied. You should always attempt the opposite by making your property seem occupied at all times. Use timers to operate your lights around the house especially on random programs. Use the same process with radio and television sets as well.
* Be sure to cancel deliveries of milk or newspapers whilst you are away for any duration. Post, papers or anything that seems to be building up is a red flag for the opportunist. Be sure to manage these issues consistently and become accustomed to the slight inconvenience this may cause.
* If you have a home intruder alarm system, ALWAYS be sure to set it on leaving the property. Once you get lazy with this practice you are likely to never set the alarm and you are massively increasing your chances of an intrusion incident.
* One thing that many do not consider is the monetary value of personal documents such as passports and bank and credit card statements. These precious documents should be as hard to access or find as possible. In the event of an intrusion you are extremely likely in this modern era to find that your identity is as likely a target as your jewellery!
* Be very suspicious of any unsolicited approach by a salesman either on the phone or at the door that portray that they sell home security protection equipment. It is sad to say this, however any such approach could be a survey on YOUR current levels of home security protection.
* Consider joining or setting up your own local neighbourhood watch scheme, where you and your neighbours help to keep a look out for any wrongdoing or dubious behaviour.
